Several towns in Veneto retain the charm and really special spirit, being as yet still surrounded by their ancient walls, built in the Middle Ages for defensive purposes and now extraordinary historical witnesses: they are nicknamed the walled towns: Este, Montagnana, Cittadella, Monselice, and also Castelfranco Veneto and Marostica.

In Este you can admire the remains of its ancient fortifications, and visit the "Museo Nazionale Atestino"with is a very important  Archaeological Museum, where are exhibited precious artifacts of ancient times (Ist millennium before Christ), and its fine old town full of beautiful architecture.
Montagnana is a timeless town, and visit it can plunge into a fairy-tale atmosphere; its perfectly preserved city walls is considered one of the most intact in Europe; in its Duomo are paintings by Paolo Veronese and a fresco of Giorgione.
Monselice is enhanced by its castle, and the path of the 7 churches, unique in its kind.
Cittadella is another big surprise for the visitor: it is possible (and recommended) to walk entirely his walkway, placed on the walls to a height of about ten meters above the ground; you can also climb the towers , which act as a lookout. The view enjoyed from the walkway is superb, since it allows you to see the entire town situated within the walls, and the surrounding landscape, up to Castelfranco, Bassano del Grappa and the mountains.
Castelfranco Veneto, in the Treviso province, is a small pretty pearl also enclosed within its walls.
All these cities were military outposts, considered very important for the maintenance of the territories against various enemies, and that is why they have been, for centuries, equipped with fortifications which were periodically reinforced.
